No, Robert, it does not have to be. The high school archery coach at the high school that I retired from as a special education teacher is the head of the Mobile County (Alabama) Public School System (100 schools) archery program. Competitive archery teams are set up at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. It has been a successful and safe program. The coaches and interested teachers and parents of the students and schools who want to be involved are well trained in archery rules and regulations, and safety. Many adult moderators reduce the possibility of injuries.

The routine was that we had five bows and five sets of arrows. The students were in lines. The first student in line would hand the set of arrows to the person in back of him. Everyone would sit down and the first in line would knoc his arrow. And on the count, the arrow would be aimed over head and pulled down and fired. Nobody would fire again until everyone was done (for safety’s sake). Well there was a cage ball (crab soccer ball off to the side and there is no way that anyone could hit that cage ball while facing forward. Well my cage ball started to deflate and the class roared. It’s not to hard to figure out who did this because the arrows were color coded. And as soon as we opened the bladder we identified the culprit. The principal took over at this point. It was a long day in the gym.

But in grade school, my teacher confiscated a tin of smoked oysters the kid in front of me was eating. That isn’t something easy to hide – the whole classroom stunk by the time she got it out
